The national cricket of Ireland will probably be remembered in history for their magnificent performance against England in the recently concluded Cricket World Cup. They defeated England chasing an extremely high score of 329. All-rounder Kevin O'Brien scored the fastest century in World Cup history. He took only 50 balls to reach his hundred.
The Irish Cricket team started its journey way back in 1855. But it could not become a part of ICC because of political differences with England. Finally, in 1993 it was granted the status of an associate with sanctioned to play only ODIs.
The team has played in two successive World Cups & has already gained a reputation of being the "giant killers". Apart from defeating England in 2011 World Cup, they have also defeated Pakistan in the previous World Cup in 2007. Cricket Ireland is currently the governing body of cricket in the country. Earlier, the game was run by Irish Cricket Union (ICU).
The team has also done well in T20 tournaments. In the 2010 World T20 Championship, they defeated Bangladesh in their opening match. O'Brien brothers played well to make quick runs & that defeat knocked Bangladesh out of the tournament. But they lost all their matches in the second round where they were grouped against Pakistan, New Zealand & Sri Lanka. William Porterfield is currently the captain of the team while ex-West Indies batsman Phil Simmons is the coach.
